Final Portfolio- Reflection

December 17, 2008

REFLECTION

Over the course of the semester I believe that my writing has improved drastically. When I first began doing the writing assignments I was very nervous while writing and I was scared of my articles not being well written. But as the semester kept moving along I began to notice that after each article, my writing improved. I was able to catch the small errors that I had made in the previous writings. I also was able to tighten up my articles by recognizing the words that simply didn’t need to be in my work. Now when I see the articles I have written I am able to compare them to my first drafts. I can definitely see the difference.

I am very proud of myself for not giving up. I was close to giving up because of how much I questioned myself as a writer. But when I started attending office hours I was able to take all the feedback and incorporate it in my writing. Office hours helped me understand more of my weaknesses and my strengths in my writing.

By the end of the final portfolio I began to see what strengths I could use more to help enhance my writing. Some of my strengths that I see in my writing are that I put in a lot of time on my assignments. I particularly did that with my profile article. I was determined to make it a solid piece. Another strength I see is being more creative and being aware of my audience. I saw this when I was able to write a funny up How To article and a more serious piece in my profile. When writing my articles for ARF also showed me that I knew how to transition from one style to another. I honestly thought that I wasn’t going to do well in the ARF assignments because I didn’t think I would be capable to write about dogs but I came through and actually wrote a pretty solid PR Proposal.

Getting a blog definitely changed my perspective on my approach to my writing. I put more time into my writing because I wanted to post them, but only if I knew that they were good enough to be seen by others. I also, began to take my writing more serious and saw this blog as a way to put my name out there. I know that if I put time and effort into my articles people will notice that I am serious and you never know with writing you can have many options.

I plan on improving my writing because by taking this class I learned that there is no such thing as a perfect paper. You must put work into your pieces and care about making your piece as successful as possible. I know my writing will improve more because I am making writing as a hobby and right now I am actually working on a writing project with V Mayz. Also one of my really good friend wants me to begin working on a piece for an artists he works with. All it takes is the right connection. Knowing that I have many opportunities to write is what makes me strive towards being great writer. You never know when a certain piece you write will open many doors in your career.

I plan to use my writing skills to the max. The project I am starting with V Mayz seems very promising. I am taking everything I learned from the class to good use. All of the assignments have helped me learn more about myself as a writer.  Having this passion for writing will help me develop more into a strong and skillful writer. I appreciate everything I learned in class because every assignment had its own purpose for being written. All I have to do is keep working hard and not give up.

V Mayz- Profile

December 16, 2008

California Rock Star

“I always knew that I would perform for a big crowd,” V Mayz said.

By his high school years, V Mayz had become an outstanding football player whose goals were to get a football scholarship and attend a four-year university.

Through perseverance and going for his dreams, V Mayz earned a full scholarship to California State University, Fresno. He was a part of a nationally recognized football program. He red-shirted his first year, and in the following four years, he became a standout strong safety.  V Mayz never imagined that his football career would take an unexpected turn in the opposite direction.

Through his rock star swag V Mayz expresses himself lyricly and is putting himself on top of his game. While performing at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Sacramento State University, and California State University, Fresno, V Mayz keeps establishing himself as a California rock star.

Moving from Arizona and ending in Sacramento, V Mayz got used to hearing many changes in his life. V Mayz is the youngest boy in his family of 11.  In his younger years, he was always surrounded by many people. People could already see that he had something that separated him from the rest, a really special talent.

His hobby of writing became his ticket into the music industry. V Mayz and teammate Marcus Riley wrote a song about Fresno State football. He decided to do a video project for the team and coaches to see. He got some help from an assistant video coordinator from the Fresno State football department, Jason Tarver. “It was fun working with him. He is a really funny, cool person,” says Tarver.

Jason Weiner, a broadcaster for ESPN 1430 radio station and a fan of Fresno State football, was at the game when he first heard V Mayz song. Weiner was drawn to his music and got him in touch with Zinkin Entertainment.

Soon after hooking up with Zinkin Entertainment, great things just kept coming V Mayz’s way. Weiner wanted V Mayz to write and produce the entrance music for a UFC fighter signed with Zinkin Entertainment, Chuck “Iceman” Lidell. That opened the door for him to have his music heard. His music had such an impact on UFC fighters Josh “KOS” Koscheck and Casey Olson that they also had V Mayz produce their entrance music.

Motivated and inspired by his daughter and his family, V Mayz accomplished his main goal: graduating with a college degree in communication. Having been a poetic writer since high school gave him the knowledge and edge to incorporate his life experiences in all of his writing. “I heard a poem he wrote about his daughter, and when you see a man talk about his daughter and really, really get into it, that shows he is a father first,” says Tarver.

With a strong West Coast influence, V Mayz has a hustler mentality in which he incorporates a unique approach to rock and hip-hop through his raw style and catchy lyrics. He was named the winner of The Source Magazine’s Unsigned Hype West Coast Tour in Fresno, Calif., in April 2008.

“That was one of the most unbelievable things that had happened to me,” says V Mayz. Competing against 28 different MCs, V Mayz was able to present his “rock star Hollywood swagger,” with a new style of music, bringing hard untouchable beats in a creative and clever way.

“It was one of those things, like, I can’t believe it. Until I went to Dallas and had to perform out there, then it finally hit me,” says V Mayz. Hearing his name introduced right before his performance made him realize that he was on his way to bigger and greater things. “Damn, they just said my name, so now what happens?” he thought.

Some of hip-hop’s biggest superstars like Ludacris, P. Diddy, and DMX have influenced V Mayz, showing him how to craft his music and strive towards building his own empire. He incorporates the style of each of these artists in his own music. V Mayz appreciates how DMX always brings such energy to his performance, while Ludacris’ rhymes make a dynamic impact on any track he is on.

Dominating in the music industry isn’t the only road V Mayz wants to follow. He wants to build his own financial empire as well. He wants to be the P. Diddy of the West Coast.

But V Mayz has found ways to set himself apart by making his own name for himself with his rock star mentality. “People see rock star as a trend; I see it as a way of life,” says V Mayz.

“He walks in the club and commands attention. If the spotlight is there, he will get the spotlight on him. He will outshine the next MC in the building,” says Tarver.

His high up-tempo beats create a distinguished feel to the versatile hooks he brings to the table. His style is definitely hip-hop, as far as the lyrics that he uses to express himself. The sound is more grunge, leaning towards what he likes to call, rock rap. A lot of his songs have rock and guitar riffs to give them something a little extra besides a synthesized beat or bass kick. “He is the new rock rap,” says Tarver.

In just a short time V Mayz has performed all throughout California and Las Vegas. He has also been able to collaborate with Rick Rock, one of the West Coast’s top producers. “To see him on stage, he commands attention, really holding his own. He can be on stage by himself and not need anybody. Not everybody has that when they first start out. For him to have it at the beginning like that, he is already a step ahead of a lot of MCs that are already established in the game,” says Tarver.

Now establishing himself in his music career, V Mayz is undergoing a management deal with Z-Box management alongside manager Shaun Silva, a major video director in the United States. V Mayz is determined to be on top. In under three years, you will see him as one of the top 40 artists. With his charisma and humility, V Mayz’s fan base will continue to keep growing. Songs like “California Rock Star” capture everyone’s attention. He brings the song to life because of the energy it commands. He has the potential to be a promising star in the music industry: a new California rock star.

FRESNO, Calif., Dec. 6 — Animal Rescue of Fresno (ARF) will host their annual

holiday open house on Saturday, Dec. 6. ARF will be visited by Santa for all the families who have adopted a dog.  ARF invites all volunteers and members of the community who want to be a part of this memorable moment.

This event will be held from noon to 5 p.m. at 4545 E. Dakota Ave. Christmas is coming to town early and is full of smiles and hope for these warm and loving pets.

ARF will have cider and cookies for everyone attending the holiday open house. Santa will make an early trip to the Central Valley to celebrate the holiday spirit and enjoy the festivities. There will be raffles and games for the whole family to enjoy.  This event will be one to remember.
ARF was founded in 1998 and has continued growing with the help of members of the community. ARF takes in dogs throughout the Central Valley due to the pet overpopulation that has developed through the years. The dogs are cared for until they are adopted or until they die of natural causes.
This organization is volunteer-only and relies on donations. Each dog has a heated kennel, a place to play outdoors, food to keep growing and remain strong, and all the right requirements to maintain their health. Hard-working volunteers share their time with these animals and care for them.
Everyone is welcome to spend some time with the dogs and get to know them. Any time you can give is precious and makes a difference for these animals who are in search of a place they can call home. A $175 adoption fee is required. ARF provides each dog microchipping, spaying or neutering, and all its shots. All the dogs need is love.
ARF’s holiday open house will be a great way to come see the difference adopters can make for these animals who were once all alone and are now with their new families. Come share the wealth of giving, and meet with old friends, new friends, and friends to come. For more information about ARF, visit the Web site,

Animal Rescue of Fresno

ARF is a nonprofit organization that has been rescuing dogs since 1998. Members of the community volunteer their time to develop a home for these fun and loving animals in need of a home. Some of the dogs were rescued from the streets, rescued from a bad home, or dropped off at the front door of ARF. ARF has been growing rapidly throughout the years, bringing in more dogs and getting more dogs adopted into good homes.

Dear Bonsu Thompson

V Mayz was the winner of The Source Magazine unsigned Hype West Coast Tour in Fresno, Calif. He was named the #1 unsigned rapper in the West Coast. V Mayz sets himself apart by incorporating rock and hip-hop through raw style and catchy lyrics.

He earned a full football scholarship in 2004 to California State University, Fresno and received a college degree in communication. Now with his hustler mentality, V Mayz is working towards getting his ticket into the music industry.

My article will focus on all of V Mayz’s accomplishments and how his life direction changed completely from football to music. I will also discuss where he gets his inspiration and what this upcoming artist has planned for the future.

I want to focus on what has shaped him into “California’s Rock Star.” I had a full-on interview with V Mayz and also his friends and fans. This article will be a good fit for your magazine, with its focuses on upcoming artists.

I truly appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Kate White

Going out to a club or bar on the weekend can get quite pricey. You pay for the entrance and you pay for your drinks. Drinks keep coming, and your money will keep coming out your pocket.  Easily you spend over $30, not including the entrance fee. Why not learn a couple of steps for getting guys to buy you drinks? Who wouldn’t want to save money on drinks? My article will guide women on how to get free drinks from guys during on a night out with the girls.

My article will focus on how to save money at clubs and bars. I will discuss detailed, tips on getting free drinks from guys while being smooth about it.  You will soon master how to choose your words wisely, how to approach men, how to begin conversation, and how to carry yourself just right, so you don’t come off in a negative way. This article will help women gain more confidence and have the upper hand.

My piece will be a good fit in your section Totally Cosmo. As an avid reader of this section, I have a better insight into how to format this article. Readers will enjoy my article’s humor and style. While men get drinks for women for all the wrong reasons, why not use it to your advantage, while keeping the guys thinking they are so slick.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you

Sincerely,

Description of activity and rationale:

ARF will host a dog pageant as a fundraiser for ARF and a way to put ARF out to the public. It will be called Fresno’s HOT Dog. The event will be held at a high school gym. Fresno’s HOT Dog pageant will have 20 dogs competing in various challenges throughout the night like any other pageant. We will be having 5 different challenges that the dogs will be completing in. The challenges will be best outfit, best swimwear, best talent, best groom, and a hot dog eating competition for the dog owners.

We will have 3 judges from the community keeping score through each round.  We will have a center stage and seating all around it. We will provide music and games before and after the show begins for the children and adults to participate in to win small gifts. We will also provide tables with information regarding ARF and what you can do to help ARF save more dogs and find a home for them too.

There is a $75 fee to enter the pageant. It’s on a first come first serve. There will also be a $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 7 entrance fees for people that come and watch the show.  We will also have booths open with snacks and drinks for people to purchase while the show is running. All the money made that night will go towards ARF towards being able to provide a better home to our dogs.

We will have a quick 10-minute intermission that will be followed by the hot dog eating competition between the owners. Whoever comes in 1st will add 15 extra points to their dog’s total, 2nd gets 10 points, 3rd gets 5 points. Lastly the points will be added up and Fresno’s HOT Dog king or queen will be crowned. The winner will take home a 1 year supply of dog food, a trophy and his/her very own bed, and respect of all the dogs  in the Valley for being Fresno’s HOT Dog.

After the pageant the fun still isn’t over. We will conclude our event with entertainment, games, and music for everyone to enjoy and celebrate working towards making a difference for our pets.

Time of year for activity and rationale:

This event would take place during spring time. Spring is the best choice for the pageant because the weather is usually just right. It’s not too cold and not too hot for people attending the show and for the dogs participating in the show.  We want to have happy dogs and happy people.

Target audience for activity and rationale:

The target audience for this particular show would be for everyone that loves dogs and want to help alongside ARF to rescue dogs from the streets, bad living environments, and abandoned dogs towards finding them a place they can call home. Everyone is targeted for different reasons.

Dog owners are a target to get them and their dog to participate in the pageant. Families are another target because most have kids and/or pets. It would be a fun and entertaining event for the whole family share while supporting a great cause. Sponsors are also a main target to help cover expenses and support animals. The elderly are a good target because many look for companionship.

Describe the types of writing that might be involved in promoting, implementing and/ or covering this activity, and explain why you would create these specific products.

For this event we will need to make flyers, a press release, make a television commercial, write proposals for radio stations and local newspapers for advertisement, and advertise in online animal Web sites.

Flyers will de distributed in various locations like pet stores, the malls, supermarkets, C S U, Fresno, Fresno City college, Fresno Pacific, etc… For the commercial we will go to Comcast, where they will make the commercial and play it in various local channels. To get radio time, we will go speak with radio stations to try and get airtime for event. To get an ad on the newspapers we will go and meet and see what our options can be. Animal Web sites will help advertise the event to other sites.

Explain the tone and style you would attempt to produce in this writing, and state why these would be appropriate.

The tone and style will change depending on who is being targeted. When targeting sponsors the tone will be serious and professional because it’s a business. With families and kids it will be light hearted, spunky, and catchy. For the elderly the tone will be more simple, straight to the point and light hearted as well.  Since we want to make this a fun and entertaining show for all we want to keep it energetic, friendly, and heartfelt.

Losing your home?

Many residents of the Central Valley are losing their homes due to foreclosure. The increased price of housing has gone far beyond the wages of the working class.  Many people have been affected by this and some have lost their homes.

Losing your home is already dreadful enough. Having to find storage for your belongings only gets worse. But what if you’re unable to take a member of your family with you? This is the dilemma many dog-owning families face today when they are forced to move into a non-pet friendly environment. What do you do then?

Finding the right home for your dog

If you are losing your house and you no longer can keep your dog, your responsibility is to find your pet a home where it can be loved, cared for, and not abandoned. There are different alternatives to finding the right home for your pet.

SHELTERS

You have the option of taking your dog to a shelter. A shelter will take your dog to try to find him/her a home. If a stray pet is at a shelter, by law it will be kept for a couple of days to see if the owner claims it. If there is no claim, the dog will be put to sleep.

The law doesn’t cover dogs that were taken in by their owners. Dogs brought in can be put to sleep at any time. Shelters have no choice due to lack of capacity. A shelter should be your last option if your best efforts were unsuccessful.

The Central California SPCA in Fresno, Calif., can be an option for your pet. To get more information about Central California SPCA, you can visit them at their Web site, www.ccspca.com.

NO-KILL SHELTERS

No-kill shelters sound like a nice place to leave your pet, but the demand for no-kill shelters is extremely high. In most cases, pets are turned down. There just isn’t enough room for all pets. It is most common that a no-kill shelter will only take in a pet that has the potential to be adopted. If this is the best choice for you, then you can consider the Valley Animal Center. You can find plenty of information on this organization on their Web site, www.valleyanimal.org.

 ADVERTISE

You can also try a classified ad to find an adopter. Advertising can be very
useful if you do it correctly. Your ad must be organized and well-written for the ad to be effective.

    DO’s

*Your ad should include a good
description of your dog. Put more

    time focusing on good  things

    about your dog. Describe what

makes this dog worth having as a

    pet.

    *If you have any requirements

for his/her new home, let the

potential adopters know.

     You need to know what

     living conditions your

     dog will face.

*Require that they bring references

so they know you are not just

going to give your dog to anyone.

DON’T’s

*Exaggerate your dog’s good

points or make him/her seem like

something he/she isn’t.

*Be negative or rude to the

potential adopters regarding your

requirements for your dog’s

new home.

*Include the price for which you

Choose to sell your dog. If you

Are giving away your dog, never

Put it in your ad. You will get

Many calls, but in most cases the

Homes won’t be suitable for your

Pet. It is easy to take something

That is free.

 RESCUE SERVICES

Another option can be taking your dog to a rescue service. A rescue service tends to be on the smaller side and could also be private. Most rescues are run by volunteers only and rely on donations. Typically, you will find that most rescues are operated at a home.

Rescues are a better choice to find a home for your pet. If your dog cannot be kept at the rescue home, they will help you search for a place and give you the right information so your dog can find a good home. You also have to put in your part and really take this seriously. You don’t just want to leave your pup in any home.

Rescues like Animal Rescue of Fresno (ARF) take stray dogs, abandoned dogs, or dogs that people bring in because they no longer can provide a good home environment for them.  The great thing about ARF is that they have a no-kill policy. The dog will remain at the home and be well cared for by volunteers who come each day to spend time with the animals and show them love and appreciation.

The dogs taken in by ARF are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on all their shots, microchipped, and heartworm tested. ARF can also help you find a home for your pet through courtesy listings. ARF offers a free courtesy listing on the Pet Portal Web site. You can visit www.petfinder.com.

Petfinder is accessible nationwide and can be a successful way to find the right home for your pet. Anyone interested in adopting will directly contact you. By accessing Petfinder, you can see what you need to do to begin the process of finding your pet a good, warm and loving home.

When the week finally comes to an end, you and your girls always look forward to the weekend. You’re ready to go out with your girls. You and the girls might want to stay in and have a couple cocktails at home, but when you’re ready to party, you’re going to want to party big. It’s the weekend and you don’t have to work. The club and bar scene are a must for you and your girls. You get to look sexy, meet boys, and get those free drinks.

James Horton III, a bartender at Fajita Fiesta Bar and Grill and Club M in Fresno, Calif. suggests that if you wear just the right outfit and add that spunky personality, you will get drinks coming your way. “I have definitely tried these methods. I was so surprised to see drinks coming to me,” says Sara, a college student.

Keep in mind that your targets are men who have no respect for women. “I only try and get free drinks when a guy looks at something else other than my face,” says Lindsay, a college student. Why not be a pro at going all out on a weekend but saving your money at the same time, since we all know how pricey drinks can be. Here are some guidelines to follow.

A Simple Conversation

Step 1

When you see a guy sitting by himself at a bar, scope him out to make sure he isn’t creepy, then approach him and immediately give him a smile and say hello. Upon him saying hello back, ask him a question about what he’s drinking. That should break the ice. Make sure you bring good conversation to the table; you want to keep him interested. Be a little flirty, but not too flirty. You don’t want to come off as easy or desperate. In that case he would probably think that he could take you home without even trying to get you some drinks to “loosen you up,” in guy terms.

Step 2

Once knowing you have his attention and he seems into you, ask who he is here with and what he is doing after. He will think you might invite him to wherever you are going. He will ask you why you haven’t ordered a drink yet. Simply say you’re unsure of what you want to drink. Of course, he is going to act as if he knows every drink at the bar.

Step 3

Even if you know what drinks he is talking about, act like you’ve never had it. He will keep on going on what drinks you should get. You then tell him to surprise you. More than likely, he will go for a drink that can get you drunk quickly. Question that you might not like the drink, and that you don’t want to pay for a drink you might not like. He will say, “it’s ok, I got it.”

“As a bartender I see this all the time. This actually works,” says James.

Step 4

You get your drink. You act like it’s the best thing you ever had. Just boost up his little ego a bit. You must go by the rules; you must stay and talk to him for a couple minutes if it’s a bar, or a whole song if you are at a club. Say you have to get back to your friends. Make sure you thank him again. Before he begins talking to you and getting your number, walk away as if you are being rushed. But if you like the guy, stay, mingle and have a great time getting to know him.

Get a Drink for Him

Step 1

When entering the bar or club, just hang with your girlfriends and wait for a guy to approach you. Knowing he approached you immediately gives you the upper hand. Now you know he finds you attractive and he thinks he has game.  He will begin a conversation trying to get to know more about you; he wants your number. “If he asks for my number and I don’t want to give it to him, I ask him to give me his and that I will call,” says Sara, “Of course I know that’s not going to happen.” Talk to him, act like you’re interested and let him believe he has the upper hand at this moment.

Step 2

Begin discussing drinks. Ask him what he’s drinking, let him know you’re thirsty, and say, “What does a girl got to do to get a drink around here?”

“This is the most frequent line that I hear at the bar,” says James.

Remember he thinks he is slick. He will try to get out of it by saying he knew that is exactly what you wanted and that he isn’t going to fall for it. Let him say all he wants about that. Just simply smile, giggle, and act surprised.

Step 3

Since he pretty much accuses you of talking to him to get a free drink from him, act appalled as if you can’t believe he would think that. Tell him he is wrong, and that if you wanted a drink, you can get it yourself. You don’t need a man to buy your drinks. Then you flip it around on him and say, “Come with me. Let’s go to the bar and I’ll get you a drink.” You will sacrifice buying one drink. When you buy him his drink, let him know that not only do you not need a man to buy you a drink, but you can even buy them for him. This is my favorite method to use. Trust me, girls this one, always works.

Step 4

He will look at you in surprise and tell you he has never had a girl buy him a drink. He will be speechless, and think you are Miss Independent. After what you told him, he is going to want to show his manhood now. It is guaranteed he will be buying you drinks the rest of the night. If you didn’t succeed in this method, it’s fine. Keep your head up. This was a risk you were willing to take.

Oh No, My Money

Step 1

Before you walk over to the bar, take your money out of your purse and give it to one of your girlfriends. Let her hold it in case the method doesn’t come through. Remember you only do this method if the guy was disrespectful to you in any way.

Step 2

Walk over to the bar, make eye contact, give him a nice smile and make small talk. While you are both talking, order the drink of your choice. Remember you must keep talking until your drink arrives. “I really like this one because when you order your drink, he will ask you what you ordered to talk to you,” says Lindsay.

Step 3

The bartender gives you your drink and tells you the price. Take your purse and look through it as if searching for your money. He will probably ask you what’s wrong and if everything is fine. Look a little irritated; tell him you just lost your money. Tell the bartender to hold on for a second while you find your money.  The guy will stop you and say he will pay. He will feel bad that you just got your money stolen and he will want to keep you from leaving.

“I remember one time I did this and the guy I was trying to get to buy me a drink actually had his buddy buying him drinks. He told me he would have paid, but he was broke. That just made it easier for me to leave. I mean come on, he can’t even buy his own drinks!” says Sara.

Step 4

Be very grateful with him and tell him you will pay him back. He will probably say, “No, it’s on him.” Thank him again, and begin talking about your money being lost. This is your chance to get away. You tell him you have to go find it and ask your girls if they have it. Of course, that is really you saying, “Bye, sucker.”
